The Vitrius from Tenetec is a costeffective automatic identification and positioning
system that can be used to track the movements of people within a building, of material within
a warehouse, or of parts on a production line. Based on advanced video processing and pattern
recognition, the Vitrius tracks passive, non-interfering tags that are visually captured and
decoded to positively identify the object. The x-, y- and z-coordinates of the tag are calculated,
as is tag orientation. This information, stored in a database, can also be used to drive icons
within a virtual 3D representation of the area being monitored. Statistics can be created,
flags can be set, and event-triggered reports can be generated automatically.

With its modular, flexible and completely scalable architecture,
the Vitrius allows its user to define not only the way that the data is presented, but also
the type of data that is collected. Flexibility begins with the tags: the size of the tags
can be tailored to the object, and the tag material can be selected according to the application.
Choices range from a simple printed paper label for indoor environments with controlled lighting,
to a rugged, waterproof badge that works in full darkness thanks to an optional infrared strobe
assembly that piggybacks the camera.

The coverage of each sensor depends on the tag size: with the 6 cm tag that is used to track
people, one or two sensors can cover an average-sized room, giving position updates with centimeter accuracy up to 90 times per second for all tagged people in the room. Using 1 cm tags and distances up to two meters between tag and sensor, the measurement error is below a millimeter. Depending on the application, sensors can be set up to track
movement throughout a building (one or more sensors per room), to track access into each room
(one per door), to track movements around a building (two or more sensors on each external
wall) or in any combination of the above.
The installation and calibration of a sensor can be done within minutes, allowing for system
reconfiguration or expansion. Additional buildings can be added to the system as required,
and the operator can decide on the fly how information should be presented. Important events
can be bookmarked, either automatically or manually, queries can be made and alarms can be
generated. Information stored in the database can also be played back, and even here the operator
can select the view or views to be used for the presentation.

The Vitrius gives the operator a comfortable and familiar tool the video camera
as a sensor, and this in itself makes setting up and using the system almost intuitive. In
addition, because the Vitrius features industry-standard interfaces and protocols, the system
integrates easily with existing facility resources (inventory management systems, numerical
control systems, access control systems, and so on) and can be introduced in a way that is
transparent to the user. Add to this passive tags that can be applied to any material without
risk of damage or interference, and you have the only tracking system that lets the user
not the technology decide on how much data is collected, and how that data is reported.
